Space clearing after a bereavement

Hands

A woman wrote to me recently with a question about how to let go of her husband’s books, clothes and other possessions, following his death 22 months previously. ‘The right thought process is needed,’ she said.

What happens during grieving

The advice I always give in this situation is not to rush into doing clutter clearing or space clearing. There needs to be a grieving period, and the length of time it takes is different for each person. But the fact that she has written to ask this question would seem to indicate that she is ready to start letting go of his things even if she’s uncertain about the approach to take.

The important thing to understand is that it’s not just a person’s physical body that disintegrates after death. Their astral body also goes through a process of shattering and their etheric body gradually dissolves, eventually leaving just the person’s Higher Self, which is the part that survives from life to life.

Actually, it’s not quite this simple because there are crystallized parts of the astral body called samskaras that can also survive death, but that’s another story. If you are interested to learn more about this, the best book I’ve ever read on the topic is Death: The Great Journey by Samuel Sagan, which is published in the form of a Knowledge Track.

Letting go

So to answer this woman’s question about letting go of her husband’s belongings, it’s really only her own feelings she needs to consider because her husband will by now be in a very different space of being where material possessions have no significance at all.

She doesn’t mention in her email the circumstances of her husband’s death, but if he was sick then a space clearing will clear out the energetic imprints that will have become embedded in the walls and furniture. It will revitalize the energies of her home so that she can begin her life afresh.

Space clearing will also clear out residues of grief, trauma and all the other mixed emotions that will have accumulated in the 22 months since his death. Grieving is a completely normal process so these are not “bad” energies. There just comes a time when it’s time to move on. Space clearing clears out the sadder, stuck energies while leaving the higher frequencies of happy memories intact.

Hiring a professional space clearer

To ease her through the process, another piece of advice I would give is to call on the help of a professional space clearer rather than attempting to do a space clearing herself. A certain objectivity and degree of vision is needed.

The space clearers Richard and I have trained have this skill and know-how to energetically hold a client throughout the ceremony so that they can feel their feelings and find their own pathway to move on. This is a wonderful gift for any bereaved person to give themselves to aid the healing and recovery process.

  1. Karen thank you so much for taking the time to answer my question regarding letting go of my husbands belongings with the right ‘thought process’ re this blog…I hope it helps others in a similar situation to myself. My husband was sick… a very fast and aggressive lung/skin cancer, and I sense the leftover feelings of fear, sadness and anxiety that this has left in the home. The energies vary..they are often good and light feeling, at other times they seem very dark and brooding…I will certainly consider the space clearing as I feel this will certainly help to move my life, and my son’s also who lives with me, on to welcome to some new beginnings. Many thanks, Diana

  2. I love this article as I remember having my sister die in my home of Cancer.. I remember the feelings I felt when she left this world and I cleaned and cleared the space afterwards, and now this space my spare bedroom feels very peaceful to me.

But what of a home where as a friend told me she feels and has seen two spirits in her home a women and a young girl.. her little girl had seen them as she was living in the home. And since the family got a new dog, he barks alot in the room across the hall where the family feels the spirits reside.. I know this sounds weird, but I know that these spirits must be stuck somehow. Would clearing get rid of these spirits?

I love your articles and I have the book “Clear Your Clutter with Feng Shui”, I have learned a lot from this book, and the older I get the more I want to get rid of stuff, and its only stuff. Thanks for educating us all.

    1. There is a huge difference between space clearing and entity clearing. Most people can do space clearing in their own home using the information in my book, Creating Sacred Space with Feng Shui, but entity clearing is a much more advanced skill and is always best left to trained professionals.

  3. Regarding space clearing after a death…what do you recommend after a pet dies? The cage is outside next to another (live) animals cage. The animal was actively dying for several days and the neighboring pet was present. We just want to make sure that he will not be affected negatively. Thank you for your advise.

  4. I wanted to ask you, if you clear clutter from an elderly relatives house like my mother who died recently. Does it get rid of ancestral blockages in the family line? My mother found it hard to let go of old stuff just in case she ‘needed it.’ Does tipping stuff, getting rid of old relics and hoarded stuff release energies as the house is deep cleaned? i understand that the external reflects the internal in terms of our space. So if my mother brought these energy blockages with her or acquired them in her life, if we clear the clutter and organise things, issues that have held the family back could move along more faster? eg. legal stuff.

    1. Hi Anjulie – So many people these days are left in the situation of having to clear out a relative’s home after they die. I’m sorry to hear you’ve had to deal with this. Your mother’s clutter will have held her back in life and will hold you back now if you don’t handle it quickly. But it doesn’t magically “get rid of ancestral blockages”, as you put it.
